Offbeat Bakery was founded on a simple idea
Vegan food should be delicious and nourishing.
We are a family-run bakery born in Brooklyn, made by hand and fueled by the community.
Partners Vivian and Ajua combine their passion for community, creativity, and real food to craft cookies that tell a story. Each treat is a little piece of home, made with ingredients that are wholesome, recognizable, and free of preservatives.
For the team at Offbeat Bakery, baking is more than following a recipe.
It is laughter in the kitchen, the smell of cookies fresh from the oven, and the joy of seeing someone’s eyes light up when tasting our creations.
We exists to foster community, connection, and belonging.
Rooted in Bushwick’s History
Bushwick, in Northeast Brooklyn, has long been a neighborhood where communities converge. Once a rural landscape, it transformed in the late 1800s with waves of immigrants, including Sicilian families seeking new opportunities in America.
Among them was Vivian’s grandparents, Joseph & Josephine Mandala, who brought their love of baking, food, craftsmanship, and community from Sicily to Brooklyn.
In the early 1900s, Joseph and his wife Josephine Mandala opened Mandala Pizzeria and Sandwich Shop at 20 Morgan Avenue, a family-run establishment that embodied hospitality, culinary skill, and neighborhood connection.
Though Bushwick faced challenges, its resilience and creativity endured, shaping the vibrant, diverse neighborhood it is today. Today, we carry this tradition into the present with plant-based, vegan baked goods, continuing a family legacy of food, community, and love.
Our goal is to keep the Mandala baking legacy going in a new way:
